These days, it’s hard to go anywhere without hearing about lawyers. There are advertisements for personal injury lawyers on the bus, ads for criminal defense lawyers in the subway, and commercials for divorce attorneys on TV. Like anything in life, what lawyers do differs from state to state and from profession to profession.
D.C. is more involved with the federal government, where a person’s legal rights are more protected. Some states like Oregon and Colorado are known for representing people in family law and other minor civil disputes. In Hawaii, you can protect your rights to hunt on private land.
The Lawyer is a very large field in American society. With thousands of different law firms, each of them has its own style of practicing law, but at the end of the day, a lawyer is simply helping people deal with disputes.
Lawyer stereotypes
When people hear the word lawyer, the first things that pop into their heads are generally the following:
Rough-and-tumble. My lawyer, Mr. Bigglesworth, he’s in his 60s and he’s been practicing law for 30 years. He’s a big guy with greasy black hair, an aging suit, a mustache that looks like it’s straight out of the 70s, and a rolled up suit jacket. He’s short and overweight. He’s never lost a case in his entire life. This is how everyone pictured a lawyer before they even knew the laws that lawyers work under. Now, picture that same person, now get a description of a business lawyer. That’s a different picture, right? It looks something like this:
Business lawyer. This person looks much more like the people that you see in the office everyday. This is the typical business lawyer.

Think of your job as a lawyer as an easy day job. You can leave your jacket at your desk and be done with the work within the day, except for a few hours of going to court. Lawyering is not all glamour and everything legal, though. It does take a fair amount of hard work, but overall, law is rewarding.
2- Pros of Being a Lawyer
You get to work with people on an hourly basis. Whether it is a client, client’s family members, or a staff member, you are able to work together to help someone who is in need.
Being a lawyer gives you experience. Being a lawyer is a professional job, not an undergrad major, and you gain so much experience working as an attorney.
3- Financial perks of being a lawyer
You don’t have to do any of the work, and you also don’t have to worry about money. When you become a lawyer, your firm sends you a paycheck every two weeks. It doesn’t matter if you win or lose. Your fee for the case is your salary. Many lawyers spend time filing paperwork, writing briefs, researching and preparing for trial, and writing depositions.
You don’t have to worry about the money because you’re not spending it. If you win, it doesn’t matter. You have no out of pocket expense. If you lose, you make a modest fee. As a result, most lawyers are pretty happy with the benefits of being a lawyer.
With no out-of-pocket expense, lawyers can concentrate on doing what they are trained to do, which is to help their clients win their cases.
4- Disadvantages of being a lawyer
Because you are taking on on other peoples’ problems, you will inevitably receive many unpleasant experiences. You will come across all kinds of people who have wronged others in many different ways. Your clients are not always the nicest people. At times, you’ll be forced to make difficult decisions. The courts are not kind to anyone, and they are not forgiving when it comes to judging errors and neglect. As a law clerk, you don’t get paid to be in the courtroom. You are only there to provide support to the lawyers and clients. That being said, you will never know what it’s like to litigate a case from the inside, so at least you can say that you tried to give it a try. I did!

As a student of law and a person interested in the law, you have to keep in mind that you are not a lawyer. The job titles are just for convenience. The case laws and laws of ethics are the authority that you should always rely on. This will help you know the laws and understand the impact of certain laws on the justice system.
